An Ohio man pleaded not guilty to writing anti-Islamic graffiti on the front of a mosque in Columbus, OH during his arraignment on Monday, March 20.
Todd Williams of Hilliard, OH, was charged with criminal mischief, desecration and ethnic intimidation. He has no prior criminal convictions.
According to prosecutors, the surveillance cameras at the Ahlul-Bayt Society Islamic Center caught Williams writing “Allah is a Fraud Dum Dums” and “Repent Turn to True God + Jesus Or Burn 4 Ever” on the front doors with a marker.
Attorney Brad Koffel is representing Williams, and entered the not guilty plea for his client during his arraignment.
Under Ohio law, the charge of ethnic intimidation would be considered a hate crime, and prosecutors stated that they want use this case to send a message that desecrating places of worship will result in harsh penalties. Williams faces up to 17 months in prison if he is found guilty on all charges.
